Chester

Officially opened in 1700, the Chester assay office closed its doors in 1962 owing to lack of hallmarking volume. Silver (& gold) pieces are highly sought after by collectors today with quality pieces fetching high prices. The hallmark is 3 wheat sheaves (2 up 1 down) within a shield with a vertical sword in the centre. Between 1701 and 1779, this mark changed to 3 lions but reverted back to the original 3 wheat sheaves design in 1779 until its closure in 1962.

Other than the sleek design, the only decoration to this piece is a applied rifle at the centre with the stock end on the left and barrel on the right.
