Newcastle
The Newcastle Assay Office was officially established in 1702.
The town hallmark features three castles in a horizontal shield. In 1721, the crowned leopard’s head mark was added to the sequence.
Date letter cycles shifted every May upon the appointment of new wardens. Cycles were famously irregular before 1773.
Due to heavy competition from Sheffield, the office finally closed in 1884.
