Glasgow
Authorities established the Glasgow Assay Office in 1819. It was the final British assay office to open. The Glasgow town hallmark has distinct symbols depicting a bird, tree, bell, and a fish. These were legendary symbols from the miracles of St Mungo.
The Scottish sterling silver standard mark used a lion rampant instead of the English lion passant.
Date letter cycles changed in July, helping modern collectors accurately date antique silver and gold pieces.
Officials finally closed the Assay Office in 1964.
