Exeter
The Exeter Assay Office opened in 1701 and closed in July 1883.
The office was a regional hub that served goldsmiths and silversmiths across Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, and surrounding areas.
The official town mark features a three-tiered castle from the arms of the city. It differed from the Edinburgh castle by the addition of the lion passant and leopard’s head instead of a thistle.
The office closed due to the falling business. Surviving pieces of Exeter provincial silver are rare and very collectable.
